RTI

Case Study

Students learn to use RTI for green concerns

Gurgaon ,Nov 19-  From demanding to know the status of and expenses incurred in river- cleaning projects to the level of pollutants being let out into the environment by industries, school students from across the country learnt how to use the Right to Information (RTI) Act to address environmental concerns at a conference here.

Organized by a non, -profit , Program for Environmental Awareness in Schools(PEAS), the three daylong conference , which concluded Sunday,  hosted more than 500 students at the Tagore.

Sanaya Nariman , an Educationalist and chairperson of the Delhi chapter of PEAS, said: ‘To be able to take any action, we first need to know what is happening in your cities and its environment and the RTI Act can empower school students to do so’.

‘We are encouraging students to file application under the RTI Act to know the status of and expenses incurred on government projects to clean up various rivers and lakes. The students can also ask for the levels of pollution being let into the air, lakes and land by industries; Nariman, daughter –in-law of Fali S Nariman, former Additional Solicitor General and senior advocate , told IANS.

The seventh national conference by PEAS was presided over by Director General of police Kiran Bedi and the Chairman of the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCRT), Krishna kumar.

Diptesh Pawa, a Class 9 student from St.Mary’s School in Mumbai, said: ‘Everyone must be aware of green issues facing our planet. After all every living organism needs oxygen to live’.

Pawa, who has been Involved with PEAS for the last two years , as already planted six trees to do his bit in convincing   he environment, and now plans to use the RTI Act to make an impact.

Sanaeya Daruwala, Class 10 student from Mumbai’s Activity High school, said: she was concerned about the climate change. ‘I have made several power point presentations in my school to make my fellow students aware of the fact that we are responsible for global warming and how we can live more responsibly.

PEAS Founder president Ken Gnakan said contrary to popular notion that schoolchildren are too young to understand green issues, the kids show more concern.

‘Thanks to the RTI Act, students to can make a lot of difference, besides spreading awareness in their homes, neighbors and schools,’ he said.

The RTI act 2005 is a watershed legislative measure for Indian democracy. A crucial law for the promotion of transparency and accountability from the government, it allows citizens to demand information (in the form of records, documents, samples and orders) from the government regarding any government department or office. The provision of penalty clause also reduces the chances of denial of granting information or giving incomplete information on part of government officials.

The conference included an eco-fashion show to help students learn how they can use waste items at home and eco-friendly fabrics such as jute to make useful products.

A MORAL STORY

The Three Questions

King Akbar was very fond of Birbal. This made a certain courtier very jealous. Now this courtier always wanted to be chief minister, but this was not possible as Birbal filled that position.

One day Akbar praised Birbal in front of the courtier. This made the courtier very angry and he said that the king praised Birbal unjustly and if Birbal could answer three of his questions, he would accept the fact that Birbal was intelligent. Akbar always wanting to test Birbals wit readily agreed.

The
three questions were
1. How many stars are there in the sky
2. Where is the centre of the Earth and
3. How many men and how many women are there in the world.

Immediately Akbar asked Birbal the three questions and informed him that if he could not answer them, he would have to resign as chief minister.

To answer the first question, Birbal brought a hairy sheep and said
.There are as many stars in the sky as there is hair on the sheeps body. My friend the courtier is welcome to count them if he likes.

To answer the
second question, Birbal drew a couple of lines on the floor and bore an iron rod in it and said.this is the centre of the Earth, the courtier may measure it himself if he has any doubts..

In answer to the third question, Birbal said Counting the exact n
umber of men and women in the world would be a problem as there are some specimens like our courtier friend here who cannot easily be classified as either. Therefore if all people like him are killed, then and only then can one count the exact number.

Message by this story : Please don’t jealous on others ability. All will get positions according to their ability, knowledge. So be proud rather than jealous.

My Happist Moment

I studied my highscool in MGCM Kanyvidalay Dandeli. during my highscool, once I wrote a my English fair very poorly and badly.  Geeta Naik my English teacher observed my fair and thrown it out from the door. She scold me very much. Whole day I remained Stood up on the bench and she didn't allowed me to take my  note book . In the evening teacher herself came to me and said"by tomorrow you have to complete the fair and has to submit to me ". And  had inspired me to do the work.

Within one night I had completed all my assignments and submitted to my teacher. At that I purchased new note book and I wrote very clean. She felt  very happy because I has written it beautifully as per her expectations for the incident and me to work hard regularly. Even I felt very happy because whole night I didn't sleep and I understood my ability to do the work.

I can say on that day I was very happy and satisfied.

I always recollect this incident and inspire myself

development dailogue

Deshpande Centre for Social Entrepreneurship Hubli, has Conducted “Developmental Dialogue” on 26th Jan to 29th Jan 2009. It is a three day conference of Social Entrepreneurs of world. More than 250 social entrepreneurs participated in this conference from USA, UK, Kenya, and Peru and from our country also. In this process I got an opportunity to be with delegates, I communicated with all them because I was in registration committee with Laxmi. And also there are other people in this team: Malini, Lata, Chandrshekar, and Gayatri.

Apart from this I and my 3 Cohort fellow have don an entrepreneurial activity. We sold Dharwad famous Pedha in Developmental Dialog. This activity also promotes me to speak with delegates.

At evening we had dinner in Hotel Naveen, it’s a very beautiful hotel. I wonder to see Lady Drummer they are performed very nice there, their energy, their confidence were very good. But there was no   support from the audience at that moment I felt very bad, because artists expects only claps. There was less claps.

The last day of the ‘Development Dialog’ is very good experience to me. We sold 58 kg Pedha. At evening we went to Hotel Trupti International. The small children from Dharwad performed ‘Bharat natya’ and some of them sung a song. It’s a refresh session for me after the three days.

Developmental Dialogue was most memorable moment for me. I learnt how to communicate with people in a politely.
